2023/07
Welcome to the July issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

Speciation analysis is more demanding than conventional trace element analysis, both with respect to selectivity and sensitivity. When different species have to be distinguished, concentrations to be measured are only fractions of the total element concentrations. Since most often speciation analysis deals with trace or even ultratrace elements, requirements for sensitivity are often challenging.

Yet, speciation analysis is not always ultratrace analysis. This month, we have two cases in the news, discussing element species not that often analysed and occurring at some higher than ultratrace levels. The first case is discussing the speciation of iron, which makes up about 45 % of the earth mass. Since it is an essential element for life, speciation analysis is mandatory for following its cycling in the environment, its uptake by organisms and its metabolism. Polish researchers have optimized and applied a hyphenated technique for iron speciation based on high performance liquid chromatography using a short cation-exchange column coupled with inductively coupled plasma optical spectrometry (see the news below).

The second case is discussing the speciation of germanium in soil. Germanium is widespread in the Earth's crust, and is the 54th most abundant element with an estimated abundance of 1.3-1.6 µg/g.  Polish researchers developed an analytical method for the speciation of germanium in soil polluted by an electronic waste processing plant (see the news below).  Germanium levels surpassed 7 mg/kg in some soil samples, indicating the pollution by the waste processing plant.

NEWS
EVISA is keeping you updated with what is going on in speciation analysis. In this section you will find news about the most current research results, about trends, legal issues and information from manufacturers in the field of speciation analysis.

Unfortunately, this month we have not seen any publication related to speciation analysis of general interest. In case that you feel that we missed something, we would be happy to receive a notification.

With all the links to further information and publications the News archive is a valuable collection of "hot topics" in speciation analysis. We continuously update even former news with new links and information so that all news are actual all the time.

DIRECTORY

EVISA's directory of scientist is a versatile tool to facilitate contact with scientists in the field of speciation and related sciences. The directory is fully searchable for names, addresses, research topics etc.  You should bookmark this directory as an always up-to-date address book. (In order to hinder SPAM robots for collecting the E-mail accounts, we hide them in a special format).

More than 290 active scientists in the field of speciation analysis already joined the directory. Join this great directory that is extensively linked to all type of other information on this site, such as homepages, conferences and literature.

If your entry is still missing in this directory, please contact us at info@speciation.net.
