LGC Project CM3.3 - Traceable measurement of chemical species (2003-2006)
Description
There is a growing interest in the characterisation of dietary sources of selenium (Se) owing to the importance of this nutritional element to human health. Varying forms (species) of Se have been used to supplement Se intake when dietary intake is insufficient. Moreover, Se supplementation is thought to induce the destruction of cancer cells and to reduce the blood supply to tumours, resulting in the inhibition of tumour growth.
An improvement in the capability to perform accurate measurements of Se species is essential to understanding knowledge of the Se species present in food supplements and their consequent digestion, absorption and utilisation by the body.
The main emphasis of project work in this programme was concerned with developing the capability and methodology needed to produce and characterise a selenised yeast food supplement certified reference material.
